In addition to organic pathological changes being identified, the arrhymia occurrence can be considered as purely functional differences. Most palpitations are paroxysmal with heart rate gradually increase and then gradually restore, but easily change. When the palpitation occurs, many people have no obviously aware symptoms. Some feel palpitation, shortness of breath and retrosternal pain. People with vegetative nerve functional disturbance are particularly susceptible to changes of heart rate. Besides, the symptoms are more obvious, but usually are accompanied by other phenomena of vegetative nerve functional disturbance, such as headache, insomnia, upset and so on.

Due to decreased estrogen concentration in the blood and increased levels of pituitary gonadotropin, menopausal women can occur symptoms ranging from different severity, including cardiovascular palpitations, when the vegetative nerve system from the equilibrium state enters imbalanced state. Short rise in blood pressure, sting in praecordia or non-fixed position,etc; and sometimes even shortness of breath, big mouth breathing, ECG T-wave may also appeare low and flat, but it can self restore; ECG has also come to normal,when perform all sorts of checks there is no evidence of organic heart disease. When carry out the medical examination, the pulse of carotid artery is the same as heart rate. The carotid sinus in the side of pressure would enable the heart rate gradually to slow down. These are characteristics of palpitations.
