Can children with congenital heart disease have physical education lesson?

Keyword:Congenital children cyanotic

Due to parents' and teachers' concerns and lack of the knowledge of congenital heart disease, most children with congenital heart disease are restricted from participation in physical activities, which is in fact unscientific.

Pediatricians believe that a certain amount of exercise is helpful to the heart functions. When the body is during the fierce exercise, the cardiac output is 4-5 times than normal conditions, but the output volume of heart pulse only increases by 25 to 50% than normal time. Thus, asymptomatic children with non-cyanotic congenital heart disease can have phisical education lesson as normal, without need of restrictions on recreational activities and competitions exercise. This is because excessively restriction these children's  activities not only affects children's physical growth, while it may increase the psychological burden to the parents and children. The more appropriate sports for them are jogging, skipping or playing table tennis, and so on, but there are vigorous exercise which are not suitable to participate in such as basketball, soccer, swimming and so on, so as to avoid over fatigue.

Children suffering from cyanotic congenital heart disease and severe heart problems should be limited in their normal physical activities. They can only choose less intense exercise, competent daily life, and try to avoid adding burdens on their hearts.

Can children with congenital heart disease have physical education lesson? It should be pointed out that if there are apparent chest tightness, dizziness, pale, breathing difficulties and blood pressure decrease and other symptoms occur while children with congenital heart disease are performing exercises, they should immediately stop the movement and as soon as possible go to doctor who is a specialist of the heart treatment.
