Doctor Gordon . Ivey from Arizona State University in the US remarked that the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation needs to distinguish different conditions of disease. As apnea or cardiac arrest caused by heart attack, while performing the cardiopulmonary resuscitation, it is not a necessary step to have artificial respiration.Instead, it will interfere with external chest compression, thus it wastes precious rescue time and ultimately delays the time to rescue. Gordon and his colleagues called on the artificial respiration to be deleted from the cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines of saving patients with heart attacks.

Doctor Gordon . Ivey said that although the artificial respiration has good results to rescue apnea or cardiac arrest caused by drowning or blockage of the respiratory tract,etc, it is not suitable for rescuing patients with heart attacks. He found in the study that the rate of survival after the professional treatment for those patients with heart disease who receive artificial respiration is 6%, while the survival rate after treatment for those who did not accept the resuscitation can reach to 5%. However, the rate is 11% for those who received chest compression.

Doctor Gordon . Ivey said, "When someone suddenly occurs a heart attack, you perform the chest compression on him,then your hands are the patient's pacemaker."
