The so-called silent myocardial ischemia refers that the diagnosed patients with coronary heart disease have no clinical symptoms of angina, but have the objective indicators of myocardial ischemia, such as typical ischemic changes in ST segment of ECG, which is a special type of coronary heart disease. However, due to no symptom, it is often overlooked.

Silent myocardial ischemia is more and more paid attention, which in recent years mainly because a large number of studies have found that about 25% to 50% patients of acute sudden death, there was no incidence history of angina in the lifetime; but among nearly 90% of autopsy it has found that these people all suffered from severe coronary atherosclerosis.

In the United States about 2% to 4% seemingly healthy asymptomatic middle-aged patients have been found to be attacked by significant coronary artery disease and silent myocardial ischemia. The reason for sudden death is usually fatal arrhythmia, while before the onset of the fatal rapid ventricular arrhythmia, ECG can detect that a causal relationship between silent myocardial ischemia and sudden death may be available.
