A recent study shows that after a heart attack the myocardial cells of the damaged heart parts can be regenerated. It was the first time that researchers have found myocardial cells have regenerative capacity. This discovery may provide new therapy for the heart disease.

Published on the 7th issue of "New England Medical Journal" of the United States, the study team constitutes researchers from the United States and Italy published papers that they found myocardial cells in the region of damaged tissue after the heart attack have divided and grew for a number of days. This is a strong evidence of myocardial regeneration. The traditional view of medicine holds that the damage of heart attack to the heart is irreversible and the body can not grow new cells to replace those myocardial cells which died of a heart attack or other heart disease.

While the new discovery by the scientists from the United States and Italy adds a new member for the family of the organ with self-repair capacity, and provides a new possibility for the treatment of heart disease. The researchers said that in the future it may inject a substance to the heart to promote the regeneration of myocardial cells after heart attacks. Their next goal is to find methods of developing potentiality of myocardial cells regeneration.
